Like any other career, there is no real secret to finding one of many stellar PR jobs. There are, however, a few ways you can improve your chances of finding a job that is a great fit for you. When it comes to getting a job in public relations, there are a few things you can do to help increase the odds of landing your dream PR job.
Internships: An internship increases your chances for a PR job better than any other bit of advice you are likely to ever get. Remain professional and act as if your internship is actually your job. A proper internship will hook you up with contacts and insider knowledge. Best of all, it will help you discover if you’re cut out for a job in PR.
Stay Modern: This rule applies to every industry, not just PR jobs. Make sure you have a Facebook page and a LinkedIn profile. It’s a good idea to have Skype and access to Google Drive as well. The last thing you want is to get an interview or a meeting with a big name only to have them ask if you can meet them on Skype right away...but you don’t have it.
Emulate PR Leaders: Even if you don’t have access to actually communicate with leaders in the industry, social media makes it easy for you to get a glimpse into their lives and methodologies. Follow these leaders on Twitter. Read their blogs. Catch them the next time they do a speaking tour. So what you can to follow their example and learn how they made it to the top if their PR jobs.
Be Available: Always make sure any promising contacts have every possible way to get in touch with you: e-mail, phone, Facebook, website...everything. More than that, if someone requests to speak with you and you are within reasonable distance of their location, volunteer to meet face-to-face. While Skype is very convenient, there’s nothing like meeting in person for the first time.
If you can manage to apply these basic steps to your pursuit of any PR jobs of your choice, you’ll run a much higher chance of success.
